This morning, February 26, air raid sirens are working in all major cities of Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are fleeing the cities, or hiding in bomb shelters or in the subway. Tens of thousands are enrolling in volunteer defense units, but they lack modern weapons. We are grateful to the NATO countries that decided to provide Ukraine with air defense systems. At the same time, the ratio of Ukrainian and Russian forces in the air is similar to the ratio of the forces of earthlings and alien invaders from the film "Independence Day". However, Ukraine does not have the ability to stop the invasion with a "magic" computer virus. All we have is the determination and sacrifice of our military and volunteers.
Despite this, during the night Ukrainians managed to fight back the enemy troops in the south, near the city of Kherson. Ukrainians also defended their capital, the city of Kyiv. For the first time since Hitler"s invasion, fierce street fighting took place in a city with a history of 1,500 years.
The enemy continues to transfer airborne troops to Kiev. Russians traditionally do not say a word about their losses, or about the victims and suffering among civilians. Meanwhile, late in the evening an Il-76 transport plane with a Russian landing force was shot down near Kyiv, and a convoy of Russian battle vehicles was destroyed in the city itself. But Russian missiles continue to fall on Kyiv, Rivne, Lviv, Kherson and other cities.
Since World War II, our people have not stood up against such a strong enemy. Russian President Putin hopes to repeat Hitler"s conquest of Poland in 1939, and establish a repressive regime in Ukraine with mass persecution of objectionable people. That is why the Ukrainian people are fighting not just for ideals and freedom, but for their survival as a nation.
The lies of Russian propaganda about "liberating" Ukrainians from their own elected government are exposed by the fact that in Kyiv and some other cities there are not enough even light weapons for everyone who wants to defend their homes. Ukraine thanks allies in the West for all the help that has already been provided and will be provided in the future. We need more. The free world can increase the supply of arms. It can provide more funds, as US President Joe Biden has already done when he announced about $6 billion in aid to Ukraine. The world can also achieve harsher sanctions against Russia, such as disconnecting it from the international SWIFT system. The economic losses for the West in this case will still be far less than the economic, political, humanitarian and, ultimately, human losses if Putin takes over Ukraine and moves on. And Putin will not stop in Ukraine, just as Hitler did not stop in Poland in 1939. The People of Ukraine urge all free nations of the world not wait until it is your own turn to call for help.
